Francis Lawrence is directing Catching Fire!

Oh my God! Yes! I had no idea how anyone was going to live up to Gary Ross’ adaptation of The Hunger Games. His direction of that movie was so beautiful and unique. Francis Lawrence directed 2007’s I Am Legend (which I’m watching right now, amazing movie, definitely check it out) so he’s no stranger to novel to film adaptations. The way he filmed I Am Legend was so amazing, the shots that showed how lonely Neville was were absolutely stunning. I’m definitely super eager to see what he does with Catching Fire. I’m so excited for this and relieved that an amazing director was chosen. I think he’ll do a better job than Ross to be honest. ;)

Although the upper image may strongly resemble the Crab Nebula, pictured below it, it is in fact a COS cell, a type of cell found in the human heart that regulates the structure of biological tissue. The image was produced by Joseph Dwyer at King’s College London, who stained an isolated cell using fluorescent antibodies before capturing the image with a microscope.

European Space Agency astronaut André Kuipers took many photos of Earth while aboard the ISS. Here are some…

  1. Lights across the Alps
  2. Whisps of sea ice around Othotsk, east Russia.
  3. North African coast and Mediterranean Sea.
  4. Salt lakes on the Australian outbacks.

This gimballing rig was designed to test astronauts’ ability to right a tumbling aircraft. It’s formally called MASTIF or Multiple Axis Space Test Inertia Facility and it’s pictured operating in the Altitude Wind Tunnel at the (then) Lewis Research Center.
It was designed as part of the Mercury program.

Elongated impact crater in the southern hemisphere of Mars returned by ESA’s Mars Express. It is thought that it may have been carved by a train of projectiles penetrating the surface at a shallow angle.
To give you a sense of scale, the smallest objects distinguishable in this photo are around 15m in diameter and the large crater is around 50km wide.
